Wisconsin Gift Baskets

If someone were giving me a fishing gift basket, and I am absolutely addicted to fishing…lol, then this would be some of the stuff I would like to see in it.

For the “basket” get a good tackle box to place all of the items inside. You can get a decent small one that would be a good starter for $10-20, it doesn’t have to be too expensive, just functional and sturdy. (We tend to take our small one out when doing live fishing and have a bigger one we take out when we use lures, that way we are not always lunking around a big tackle box everywhere, so a small one should start her just fine.) It’ll also be easy to wrap if you choose to do so for added surprise…lol.

In the box put a couple of packages of slip bobbers with bobber stops. Maybe a package of still bobbers as well. Two or three packages of split shot weights, in a couple of sizes. A spool of fishing line, either braided or flourocarbon is better (but she can use monofiliment as a starter if the others are out of your price range). Line test weight is going to depend on where she is fishing, but I tend to stick to either 8lb, 10lb, or 12lb line, any bigger than that and the fish see it too easily. If she is going for LARGE fish though, she might want something a little heavier.

She will need lots of hooks and you can get small packages for about $1.50 and get varying sizes. (The sizes we tend to use the most are 1/0, 2/0, and 3/0 Eagle Claw wide worm hooks, Eagle Claw Crappie Hooks, and size 3/0 Eagle Claw circle sea hooks. The sizes will vary though depending on what size fish she is looking for, but I’ve found 3/0 and 4/0 will typically get you decent size fish without neglecting a smaller fish).

You might could pick out a couple of lures to throw in as well. Anything that will allow a lot of movement, color, and noise will work good. Just don’t pick anything too large, or the fish won’t be able to get it in it’s mouth. I’ve found live bait works best anyway, so you could just start with a few really good ones for now. She can go from there.

I doubt you would be going so far as to buy her a pole, but if you do, you can get decent starter poles at Walmart for $30-40. But the type is going to depend on her skill and preference, so that would probably be better left up to her, or you go pick it out with her after surprising her with the tackle box with neat items.
